Vicariously Blogging

The link below is to Hurricane's blog on Postholer.com. We met "Bill" from new zealand when we started in San Diego. He was one of the four members that i dubbed "Team Zero." His stories are good, and it seems like we would have hated doing this snow stuff.  My hats off to Hurricane, he is my hero, as are the many others who are out there still... unga bunga.

Homeward Bound

So after 500 miles of hiking, we are done with the PCT for this year. Thanks for your support and enthusiasm during all of this, it's been less than easy out here. I'll tell ya all about it when i see you, and i'll get the final 100 miles of kodak photos up someday in the future. The sierras are still snowed in heavily, and many hikers are trying some kind of "flip flop" where they go up north and hike back down to do the hard part in august. Anyone who wants to go section hike some of the AT when i return, just let me know.. i have some leftover trail food, and 3 pairs of shoes left... So for now, we're off to Santa Cruz, and then i'll be catching a plane from San Fran to Ohio to get my car and go to Charleston. Beach and friends sound good right now. Salt water on my blistered feet, and full sun to erase my hiker tan... i hope the oil hasn't reached the SC coast yet!

Unga Bunga to you and yours.

Use of donation funds...

To those kind souls who have donated to our cause via the paypal donate button, we thank you. Yesterday we ordered 2 bear canisters from BearVault. You put all your food in it, and close it up at night and take it 100 yards from where your tent is, and the bears (if they find it) cannot figure out how to open it, they play with it all night, and then they leave it sitting there in the morning. Bear canisters are required in the Sierras and Yosemite and they weigh 3 extra pounds, like we need that! The good part is that i don't have to hang the food every night. The company, BearVault, has a special PCT hiker rate and ships them for free directly to Kennedy Meadows at the foot of the Sierras.

Also, we have been checking out other people's water filters, and we decided to use some of the donation money to buy ourselves a faster pumping, lighter filter - the Katadyn Hiker Pro. Now we will save time at the water sources and we won't have to argue about who has to pump the water!! My old filter was really slow and hard to pump...

So thank you thank you thank you to all you generous donation givers out there. I hope you don't expect us to make it all the way to Canada, although we'd like to, it may not happen, just trying to get thru the sierras first, then to Oregon, and so on... here are some photos of the items that you bought us, and again, thank you:

BV500 - $70 each

Katadyn Hiker Pro - $87 with Ca tax

Kodak Moments!

I created a picasa photo album of all of the REAL photos from my 4oz $129 Kodak easyshare camera. They document the first 400 miles of our trip. There are a couple of videos in there too! I hope it is easy to navigate and explore, it was the easiest way to get them up to the web in a 2 hour limited period on Alison's computer.. here is the link http://picasaweb.google.com/mossherbstien/400PCTMiles#

That little camera takes some great panorama photos!

I'm also gonna ad a link in the green sidebar of the blog to get to this album so you can find it easier.

unga bunga, going to the beach now!
