Vicariously Blogging

The link below is to Hurricane's blog on Postholer.com. We met "Bill" from new zealand when we started in San Diego. He was one of the four members that i dubbed "Team Zero." His stories are good, and it seems like we would have hated doing this snow stuff.  My hats off to Hurricane, he is my hero, as are the many others who are out there still... unga bunga.

Homeward Bound

So after 500 miles of hiking, we are done with the PCT for this year. Thanks for your support and enthusiasm during all of this, it's been less than easy out here. I'll tell ya all about it when i see you, and i'll get the final 100 miles of kodak photos up someday in the future. The sierras are still snowed in heavily, and many hikers are trying some kind of "flip flop" where they go up north and hike back down to do the hard part in august. Anyone who wants to go section hike some of the AT when i return, just let me know.. i have some leftover trail food, and 3 pairs of shoes left... So for now, we're off to Santa Cruz, and then i'll be catching a plane from San Fran to Ohio to get my car and go to Charleston. Beach and friends sound good right now. Salt water on my blistered feet, and full sun to erase my hiker tan... i hope the oil hasn't reached the SC coast yet!

Unga Bunga to you and yours.

Use of donation funds...

To those kind souls who have donated to our cause via the paypal donate button, we thank you. Yesterday we ordered 2 bear canisters from BearVault. You put all your food in it, and close it up at night and take it 100 yards from where your tent is, and the bears (if they find it) cannot figure out how to open it, they play with it all night, and then they leave it sitting there in the morning. Bear canisters are required in the Sierras and Yosemite and they weigh 3 extra pounds, like we need that! The good part is that i don't have to hang the food every night. The company, BearVault, has a special PCT hiker rate and ships them for free directly to Kennedy Meadows at the foot of the Sierras.

Also, we have been checking out other people's water filters, and we decided to use some of the donation money to buy ourselves a faster pumping, lighter filter - the Katadyn Hiker Pro. Now we will save time at the water sources and we won't have to argue about who has to pump the water!! My old filter was really slow and hard to pump...

So thank you thank you thank you to all you generous donation givers out there. I hope you don't expect us to make it all the way to Canada, although we'd like to, it may not happen, just trying to get thru the sierras first, then to Oregon, and so on... here are some photos of the items that you bought us, and again, thank you:

Kodak Moments!

I created a picasa photo album of all of the REAL photos from my 4oz $129 Kodak easyshare camera. They document the first 400 miles of our trip. There are a couple of videos in there too! I hope it is easy to navigate and explore, it was the easiest way to get them up to the web in a 2 hour limited period on Alison's computer.. here is the link http://picasaweb.google.com/mossherbstien/400PCTMiles#

That little camera takes some great panorama photos!

I'm also gonna ad a link in the green sidebar of the blog to get to this album so you can find it easier.

unga bunga, going to the beach now!

L.A. bound

i am getting better at this. i still get sore and my feet hurt every day. the food is a little monotonous, but good enough. the water is sometimes awful and sometimes ice cold shooting straight out of the side of a mountain, melted snow filtered through the ground, better than any filtered water i've ever had. funny, as i'm poised to spend a week in L.A., my LAX fantasies hold less appeal than they did a couple of weeks ago. my thoughts are less "what am i doing?" and more "this is what i'm doing". it's not like i suddenly love hiking, it just seems so much more possible now and i kinda can't just quit 'cause it's hard.
so here we sit at hiker heaven, the saufly's back yard mobile home hiker hangout in agua dulce. the mobile home, old rv, and many large tents with cots filling the yard can sleep up to 50 (!?) hikers. only about 20 of us here tonight.
we just climbed to the top of the snowiest mountain yet (see photos below, look closely, i'm in one of them) and then walked through the hotest section of desert yet. i have learned how to manage my blister issues- 2 pair of injinji toe socks rotated and rinsed in creeks whenever i have the chance and always taking my shoes off when i take a break to let my feet cool off and dry out. i have officially lost 2 toenails and fear another will follow in their footsteps... it's not painful but i hope they grow back nice.
the wildlife has begun revealing itself to us. within a few minutes of walking out of wrightwood we saw a coyote. it just trotted along the trail in front of us, looking over it's shoulder every few seconds until it veered off on it's own route.very cool. then i had to pee. i went over to a rock with a nice view, gave it a quick once over, climbed on, did my business enjoying the view, started to stand up and OH MY GOD A RATTLE SNAKE BEHIND ME! BEHIND ME! i did a quick hop hop off that rock before it dawned on me that i would have had to step over the dang snake before i stuck my butt in it's face. no wonder it was mad. very scary.
this last section of trail was rerouted around a recent forest fire. the first 7 or so miles of the detour were on a really nice piece of trail that followed a canyon down down down to a creek. about half way down moss alerted me to the presence of a bear A BEAR up above us on the hill. it was not interested in us and scooted away pretty quick. we got a great view of it's back side though. very exciting. when we got to the cold rushing creek we did laundry, took dips and layed around in the shade for 3 hours in the heat of the middle of the day. awesome.
the middle of the detour is all on roads. though some hikers are choosing to do the whole road walk- "from mexico to canada"- we chose to skip the 37 miles on the edge of a hot paved highway and got a ride from the new trail angel on the scene- mr. vegas. he has a lexus suv and we will be getting our 3rd ride from him in the morning to the train station. we will be in L.A. for the next week, i'm sure you'll get to see pics.
btw, even with the hitch, we have walked 400 miles. 400 MILES!
love
