Hi all...
Moss and Nano have made it to Wrightwood, Ca finally (PCT mile 370)! We've been here for 2 days, resting and drinking and eating. Highlights of the last leg of the trip:
Left Big Bear and hiked in 9 miles out of town finally seeing the lake from up high.
Next day we hiked about 16 miles and ran into our first big set of fording creeks... i went thru in my shoes, nano used her flip flops.
The next day was the Deep Creek hot spring day!! After hiking 15 or so miles along a beautiful canyon way up high looking down at Deep Creek, we decended to the hot spring area. Took the packs off and immediately got in the hot tub!! It had a wall built up around it to hold the hot water coming out of the ground, and drained into a second pool below. In fact, the cold creek was right there too, you could swim in the cold creek, climb the rocks up to the hot tub, and then go right back into the creek. There was a sign that said no camping, but we carry our pct thru hiker permits that give us permission to camp within so many yards of the trail, so we set up the tent right on the beach in front of the creek!! It was a thursday night, and there were about 10 people there. We heard from some hikers that were there on friday that there were 100 or so people! Lucky us!
Mojave Dam came next... We left the hot spring early (after a private morning dip at 4:45 a.m.), and rode the side of the canyon again all the way to the dam. I was way ahead of Nano, i followed the signs, she did not... she ended up way up on top of the dam, and i was at the bottom when she finally saw me. Crappy. We forded the creek again, this time both in our sandals, and ate lunch on the other side while our feet dried. We camped early that night, with Silverwood lake on the other side of the mountains...
Silverwood lake appeared suddenly over the pass the next morning, it was Saturday of Memorial day weekend, boats were blasting booty music, kids were dancing at the picnic area, and the adults had BEER!! We just about ran to where they were, and i put money in my hand and went to all the different families offering money for their delicious beer.. they would not accept the money.. but they gave us 5 beers in total!! Yay! Beer on the lake on memorial day weekend! It was a big party on the lake! Later I got some great grill food from a mexican family, and we packed it out for later..We made it to Little Horsethief Canyon (17 miles total that day even with all the stopping) knowing that Mc Donalds at Cajon Pass was coming up the next morning.
Cajon pass had it all: subway, mc donalds, del taco, 3 small stores, and I ate at each! We spent 4 hours there, re supplied a bit, and headed back out, under I-15 and into the evil Sheep Fire reroute. Sucktown hiking on steep dirt roads. Camped with a million mexicans (who by the way, really love memorial day and camping), woke up for more road walking...
The reroute just sucked all the way around, hot asphalt, dumb dirt roads, and a shooting range with crappy snacks. In fact, one of our fellow hikers, Vader, a girl from Austrailia, got her entire pack stolen at the firing range while using the restroom. We are all really sad about that.. Anyways, we climbed over 5000 feet from desert to pine forest overlooking Wrightwood, and stayed one last night up on top at 8200 ft.
5 miles of walking thru snow in the morning, and we were at highway 2 (they call it Inspiration Point). The road was dead dead dead. No cars. We sat there for over an hour hoping for a ride, and then a woman bringing other hikers back to the trail picked us up and took us to this great coffee shop where the guy gave us free coffee! We paid 70 bucks for a crappy room in town, and then last night we were given a cabin for FREE at the Methodist Church Campground up the hill. And all is well, and we hike out again tonite heading for a very snowy peak, Mt. Baden/Powell. Then there's this big fire reroute that we are gonna hitch most of if it's on pavement. And in 80 miles, we are going to Los Angeles for 5 big fat zero days!! Got a free place 2 blocks from the beach in Santa Monica waiting for us on the 8th of june.. yay!!
People want to use the computer here, so until next time... unga bunga.
